BOHO-CHIC: The Colour Palette (Part 3)

Earthy Colours

An important key element in bohemian fashion is the colours. Typical boho colours are rich and warm in colour. So focus on black, brown, cream white, khaki and olive green as your main fashion colour palette. 

And build it from there with gold, silver, grays, dark red, deep purple and other vibrant colors. Remember to keep the colour combinations simple with no more than 3-4 colors.

Unfortunately, not everyone suits the boho colours stated here. Some of the colours might come out too strong or weak depending on what skin tone, hair and eye colour you have.

You might want to take a colour analysis test to identify your best colours. Colour is pure science so focus on selecting the right ones prevents you from killing your appearance. Or use neutrals to adjust the temperature of the colours. For example, wear gold to warm up black or gray. 

Note: Don't worry, if the boho colours aren't on your personal colour palette, you can always do a few adjustments to make it work for you. Always wear your best colours near your face because that's where people will notice first. All other colours can be worn from the waist down.

You can also consider other colour nuances that are similar to the mentioned colours. And of course, if muted, pastel colours are your thing then you can incorporate those colors with the boho colours - making bohemian fashion something of your own! 

BOHO-CHIC: Bring Out The Personality (Part 2)

Let me begin by saying that finding your personal fashion style is about getting to know yourself. It's about being connected with the very essence of who YOU are - and be confident about it! 

So WHAT exactly is the YOU and what does it have to do with fashion?

Imagine a world (call it "Sameville") where everybody wore the same clothes. A place where they had the same style and liked the same things.

Now that wouldn't exactly be the most colourful and stimulating world... would it?

But the sad reality is - the majority of people tend to go this route when it comes to clothes! So this is where developing your style comes into the picture.

Dare to be yourself and wear the clothes that express the unique and fabulous person you are!

Colour this life with shapes, colours and styles - and be the shining example of the beauty of diversity :-)

Creating your own personal style is the art of combining an outfit, or an image if you will, based on the various aspects of your personality and lifestyle, which consists of:

- Your taste

- Interests

- Desires

- Inspirations

- Aspirations and 

- History

You bring a couple (or all) of them together and let it shine in the way you dress. But of course, only the aspects you want to express and show to the world!

Why Is It Important to Develop a Personal Fashion Style?

Oh, the reasons are many but it's mainly to feel & look good! Creating your unique style helps you achieve a sense of confidence and comfort in how you put together an outfit. This sets you apart from the rest - the awkward-looking fashion victims you see out there on the street and in the cookie-cutter media. 

Fashion and style are two different things but similar in so many ways.  Fashion is about looks and image that are popular in a specific time and period. Style on the other hand, is more about expressing your individuality through clothes, and it doesn't have an expiration date. It's more REAL.  Fashion gives you the inspiration, ideas and the nudge to dare - and style is what you make out of it.

Blend a boho outfit with something that's more YOU and TODAY.

You want to look trés chic, so avoid the total hippie á la street beggar look by blending boho with your own signature style.

It takes a lot of trial and error to find your personal clothing style, so don't worry about making mistakes along the way. In fact, developing your personal fashion style is a journey not a destination. Experimenting and just having fun help you get to know yourself better :-) 

Style = Individuality

Once you connect with your core fashion persona, your style will improve and you'll look fabulous. This will radiate through the way you dress. You'll feel good and and attract the same admirations clothes-horses like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe are (still) getting!

Their trick? Well, they knew that they didn't need to have a certain look to look good. Instead, they accentuated their individuality. 

Marilyn Monroe had the curves and personality to create that feminine, sexy image which she was known for. Imagine if we put her signature halter dress on slim-trim sporty and sophisticated Audrey Hepburn? Uh-uh.. Imagine how out of place she would feel! 

Audrey's straight, minimal tee shirt and pants on curvy Marilyn? Don't get me started. ;-) See why some trends and clothing styles you see in magazines just don't look good on some people?

What to Avoid When it Comes to Boho Style

If there's one thing many girls and women do wrong when attempting to achieve the look, then it has to be: 

Putting on too many & too long layers!

Uh-oh. That is so not the boho chic look we're aiming for. No matter confidence, if your outfit has too many long layers you'll look smaller and swallowed up. Especially if you're short by nature. I know, it's tempting to layer your outfit with your favorite accessories but there is a fine line between looking casual-stylish and trying too hard. 

So How Do You Layer an Outfit?

  

Here are 2 important pointers:

1. Go easy on the colour combinations, layers, length and fit of your outfit. Avoid anything that's bigger than your body frame (use a belt to a shapeless bohemian dress if you have to) or anything that extends past your feet. If you're Petite make sure to adjust to your body scale.

2. When it comes to layering, you'll usually know where to stop.

Step a few feet away from the mirror and take notice of how the clothes fall from your frame.

Does it draw attention away from your face?

Does it "drag" your frame down, making you look smaller or stumpy?

Does it make you look heavy or heavier than normal on some areas?

If yes, take one layer off or consider wearing something less dense-look.

Keep it feminine and chic by mixing oversized with tailored/fitted clothes. Like say, if you're wearing a oversized sweater or tunic top, add a pair of straight or slim-fitted jeans to balance out the look.

Fall: 2013 Fashion Trends

Fashion is a little like time travel, always borrowing from the past but living in the future. Forecasting trends ahead helps inform our choices of what to buy now. What will be seasonal, what will last, what will be capturing our attention and inspiring our tastes 6 months or a year from now?

With those questions in mind, here’s an early preview ahead to fashion in 2013, with a look at some of the anticipated key themes of the fall / winter 2013 season.

Global trend forecasting agency MPDClick see adventure, creativity and nostalgia forming a basis of three key themes in fall / winter 2013. They’ve titled them Wanderlust, Reflective, and Expression.

Wanderlust Wilderness travel inspires a high-winter trend that combines the keen sense of adventure of iconic explorers with a renewed fascination for the great outdoors. This lifestyle trend combines modern functionality with traditional fashion styles.

Colours: grounded slate grey, tawny brown and midnight blue, “enlivened with fennel green, warm rustic red, and clear crystal blue”.

Elements: modernised Fair Isle knits, florals in earthy colours, graphic prints that take their cues from mountain landscapes and alpine animals.

Reflective: Modern generations mix nostalgia for their Soviet heritage with their contemporary futures, resulting in a blend of quirky folk, Soviet style packaging and a fascination with branded sportswear.

Colours: bright accents against muted tones. Bright gold and intense turquoise.

Elements: bright, folk-inspired florals with a tough edge.

Expression: Creativity is reinterpreted using expressive freedom within the urban environment: a rise in art-squats ensures a considered approach to artistic ventures, commenting on social change with a refective and humorous slant.

Colours: unusual combinations of artistic expression, including “pop colours of vivid violet-blue and fluoro yellow.”

Elements: vivid pastel and fluoro pops of colour. Painterly prints and patterns, haphazard brushstrokes and luminous tones.

Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company and the global authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, announced PANTONE® Fashion Color Report Fall 2013, a comprehensive overview of designers’ use of colour in their upcoming collections. 

Released on the first day of New York Fashion Week, the PANTONE Fashion Color Report features the top 10 colors for women’s and men’s fashion for fall 2013, along with designer sketches, quotes and headshots.

Women’s Colour Palette

This season, designers express the many moods of fall with skillfully arranged collections that will enhance and enliven customers’ outlooks as the colder months set in. Similarly, colors come together to create moods that range from sophisticated and structured to lively and vivid, encapsulating our inherent need for wardrobe variety to reflect emotions that run from thoughtfully introspective to irrepressibly related. With the changing season, the greens from spring evolve and develop. 

Multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate, bringing luxury and elegance to the palette, while yellow-toned Linden Green brings a lightness and brightness to the deeper shades of fall. Try pairing both with Mykonos Blue, a bold, meditative blue, for a classic and relaxed fall look.

Exotic Acai adds mystery and richness to the palette, and can be incorporated with the other colors to create a number of powerful fall combinations. Pair the elegant shade of purple with Emerald for a regal disposition, or spirited Samba red for an expressive and dramatic look. Koi, a decorative orange with dazzling and shimmering qualities, is a statement color that serves as a pick-me-up for your wardrobe. Vivacious, an unruly and wildly deep fuchsia, adds an ebullient sensuality to the palette.

Pair Vivacious with anchoring Deep Lichen Green, a naturally lush shade of green, for a dynamic juxtaposition that captures both ends of the seasonal spectrum. Rounding out this season’s cornerstone colors, Turbulence, a dark mercurial gray, and Carafe, a rich, glamorous brown, provide more interesting and sophisticated alternatives to the black basics usually worn in colder months. Both staple neutrals pair gracefully with more expressive colors within the palette, such as Samba, Koi and Vivacious.

Men’s Colour Palette

This season, more than ever, there is a shift towards a unisex color palette. Similar to the women’s palette, the versatility of the men’s colors for fall allows for more experimentation as the weather cools.

Luxurious Emerald, a sophisticated and vivid green, should be paired with Mykonos Blue or Linden Green for a clean and classic look. Acai adds exotic mystery when paired with bold statement colors like Samba, while Koi remains decorative and dynamic, adding a pop of orange to a neutral wardrobe. Deep Lichen Green acts as the cornerstone color for the men’s palette as well; however, pair the shaded mossy green with Beaujolais, a full-bodied red, for an elegantly masculine, quintessential fall look.

Unpredictable Turbulence and warm, rich Carafe, also play vital roles in men’s fashion trends, serving as strong staple hues for outerwear throughout the cooler months. Create a well-balanced look by combining either neutral with Beaujolais or Koi.
