iFashion: The Life of The Intern

As a Fashion Management and Communication student at North West School of Design in my final year, and also a very keen fashion blogger, I decided to approach iFashion for my three week internship.

My passion for fashion comes from travelling and music. The places I go to and as a musician the music I listen to influences what I wear on a day to day basis. But this is how I got to explore the business of fashion media:

I chose iFashion not just because we NWSD students are familiarized with this fashion portal on a weekly basis, but because I wanted to get the feel of online news publishing. So iFashion was my first option, and I was lucky enough to be accepted.

On my first day, I immediately started shadowing and assisting the Editor of iFashion, Londiwe Mbhele. As nervous as I was, she quickly made me feel at ease. I was also introduced to several office staff and key personnel, which helped me familiarize myself with the company’s inter-linked departments, and gave me an overall feel of the organization’s corporate culture. After that she showed me the basic computer applications utilized in day-to-day operations, their policies and procedures. I also got a company-provided laptop in a comfortable, modernly-furnished office.

My main responsibility was reading all the press releases that the PR companies of brands and designers sent and creating news articles around that information. I also assisted with responding to iFashion queries, which included questions such as: how to become a model or start a fashion label and general enquiries of the business and latest news. In addition, I participated in accompanying the editor to all the events she needed to attend, whether it was for a brand birthday celebration in Sandton City, a designer’s store opening or SA Fashion Week’s fashion Wednesdays – it was great to learn how busy it can be from hopping from one event to another. I also kept the iFashion followers on social media networks updated with news and photos on some occasions.

Through this job experience, I was able to pick up a lot of skills, such as effective networking with designers and media; analytical and writing skills. I had the opportunity to see how the editor communicated and worked with other people in the industry and also how those in editorial and PR work together. Through this process, I was able to solve problems effectively, verify media information through general conversation, look for opportunities within the industry, and provide a professional service.

Overall, I would say I’ve learned a lot about online fashion news portals. Whether it`s with one staff member or ten. I feel very lucky to have been part of the iFashion team.
