iFashion: The Life of The Intern
As a Fashion Management and Communication student at North West School
of Design in my final year, and also a very keen fashion blogger, I
decided to approach iFashion for my three week internship.
My passion for fashion comes from travelling and music. The places I go
to and as a musician the music I listen to influences what I wear on a
day to day basis. But this is how I got to explore the business of
fashion media:
I chose iFashion not just because we NWSD students are
familiarized with this fashion portal on a weekly basis, but because I
wanted to get the feel of online news publishing. So iFashion was my first option, and I was lucky enough to be accepted.
On my first day, I immediately started shadowing and assisting the Editor of iFashion,
Londiwe Mbhele. As nervous as I was, she quickly made me feel at ease. I
was also introduced to several office staff and key personnel, which
helped me familiarize myself with the company’s inter-linked
departments, and gave me an overall feel of the organization’s corporate
culture. After that she showed me the basic computer applications
utilized in day-to-day operations, their policies and procedures. I also
got a company-provided laptop in a comfortable, modernly-furnished
office.
My main responsibility was reading all the press releases that the PR companies of brands and designers sent and creating news articles around that information. I also assisted with responding to iFashion queries, which included questions such as: how to become a model or start a fashion label and general enquiries of the business and latest news. In addition, I participated in accompanying the editor to all the events she needed to attend, whether it was for a brand birthday celebration in Sandton City, a designer’s store opening or SA Fashion Week’s fashion Wednesdays – it was great to learn how busy it can be from hopping from one event to another. I also kept the iFashion followers on social media networks updated with news and photos on some occasions.
Through this job experience, I was able to pick up a lot of skills, such as effective networking with designers and media; analytical and writing skills. I had the opportunity to see how the editor communicated and worked with other people in the industry and also how those in editorial and PR work together. Through this process, I was able to solve problems effectively, verify media information through general conversation, look for opportunities within the industry, and provide a professional service.
Overall, I would say I’ve learned a lot about online fashion news portals. Whether it`s with one staff member or ten. I feel very lucky to have been part of the iFashion team.

AW 14/15 Pastels in Gucci's Latest Ad Campaign
Courtesy of iFashion
Written by Karla Bosch
Natasha Poly, Raquel Zimmermann, Anja Rubik and Suvi Koponen are part
of the chosen cast of Gucci’s Autumn/Winter 2014-2015 campaign.
The models are all dressed up in the latest collection devoted to the
60’s era. Italian fashion house Gucci is among the last to introduce its
autumn/winter 2014 advertising campaign. The portraits taken are
purposefully old-looking, to give them a vintage feel. The girls are
dressed in fur jackets with long naps, A-line coats and high boots made
of snake skin. You can also see the updated Jackie Hobo bag in beige
pastel held by Russian model Natasha Poly.
“With this campaign, I wanted to create modern, evocative portraits that epitomize the essence of the Gucci woman – individual, strong, sensual, and glamorous,” said Frida Giannini.
Currently making waves online, the campaign will go on print in August and September magazine issues. But before that, a billboard on Sunset Boulevard will pervade the grand group shot with all the girls including Joan Smalls, Karmen Pedaru, Nadja Bender, all wearing crystal embellished mini-dresses.

NWSD: Fashionably Digital
For the last 15 years, we NWSD (North West School of Design) fashion students showcased our
traditional Advertising Fashion Shows in malls and shopping centres, showcasing avant garde looks created by us, the students who designed, made and
model our fantasy garments using branding and packaging material of the
participating tenants in these malls.
For the 2014, our Principal Marlene Oosthuizen and her creative team decided to spice things up a little and to showcase these designs of ours to a larger audience – a digital audience!
Being in my 3rd year at NWSD as a (Fashion Management & Communication) student, it was my 3rd time I also had to design, make and model a branding garment. And as all my friends AND fellow fashion students at the college know... I'm not the greatest when coming to the making of the a garment! But ofcours I had no choice but to do it. (& if I must admit.. it is kinda fun doing the whole process.)
The brand that I (and four other students) had to present was...
KONICA MINOLTA. (read about them...)
So after we've designed and made our garment we had to prep and rehearse with the photographer/videographer Donovan Roets from Donovan Roets Photography for our first ever DIGITAL FASHION SHOW!
And after we were done...
This is what HAPPENED!

Anel had a love for fashion from a very young age. Her mother, a very accomplished after hours seamstress, would make clothes for the family and friends with Anel watching in amazement. As soon as Anel grasped the basics of a sewing machine she could be found stiching away for her doll, Lucy, or Lingpie, their family poodle.

As soon as Anel grasped the basics of a sewing machine she could be found stiching away for her doll, Lucy, or Lingpie, their family poodle.
At age 18, Anel entered the North West School of Design, Annual “Design your Future” Bursary Competition. At the Graduation Fashion Show of the North West School of Design, her designs, “Monopoly” and “Playing with Fire” astounded the audience and she walked away with the bursary to study Clothing Design and Technology. With her studies completed, Anel spent a 4 month internship with well known couture designer Michael Bezuidenhout. Following this Anel started her own fashion design studio and in February 2010 she launched her own lable, “Anel Botha Couture”.
Anel’s design prowess has resulted in her winning numerous awards including; One of the nights best dressed, worn by Gugulethu Zumu, at the You Spectacular Awards, Style Icon of SA awarded to Pabi Moloi at the South African Style Awards in an Anel design, Most elegant themed couple at the J & B Met, Most Striking Couple at the Durban July, Classic Raceday winner at the Durban July, finalist in the You Gomma Gomma Fashion Chalange and Bridal Africa Young Designer Competitions.
